How to Tell If Your Web Agency Overcharged You (Red Flags to Check)

"Did I pay too much for my website" is a hard question to answer in the abstract, since price genuinely varies by scope. But a handful of concrete checks help separate a fair price from a real problem.

What platform did you actually get

A five-figure invoice for a site that turns out to be a barely-modified free template, with no custom functionality to show for the cost, is worth questioning directly with whoever built it.

Do you actually own it

You should have full access to your own hosting, domain, and every account involved — not be locked into only making changes through the original agency. If access was never handed over, that's a real problem independent of price.

Was the scope ever actually written down

Open-ended "we'll figure it out as we go" projects are where costs balloon the most, and it's genuinely hard to judge whether a final number was fair without ever having agreed on what was actually being built.

How does it compare to other quotes for the same defined scope

A significantly higher price isn't automatically wrong if it included meaningfully more — custom functionality, SEO work, ongoing support — but you should be able to name specifically what that extra cost bought.

Is the site actually doing its job

A fairly-priced site that doesn't load well, doesn't rank, and doesn't generate leads has still failed to deliver value, regardless of what it cost. Price and value are two different questions, worth judging separately.

If several of these come back concerning, the useful next step isn't necessarily a fight with the original agency. It's a second opinion from someone else on what you actually have, and what it would take to get it where it needs to be.
